GenCyber Tulsa 2023 – A Cybersecurity Camp for Native American and Female High School Students Increasing Native American and Female representation in the cybersecurity workforce GenCyber Tulsa 2023 Thank you for a great camp this summer! The camp is now over, but if you have any questions, please feel free to reach out at gencyber@utulsa.edu ! Cybersecurity Camp for High School Students June 5-9, 2023 – 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM The University of Tulsa’s School of Cyber Studies is hosting a week-long GenCyber Tulsa summer day camp for High School Students. The camp’s goal is to stimulate student awareness of and interest in cybersecurity careers. The GenCyber summer camp is a comprehensive and activity-based program for high school students entering (primarily) the 11-12th grades in the Fall 2023. The camp will introduce cybersecurity concepts such as defense in depth, confidentiality, availability, thinking like an adversary, and keeping it simple. Students are not required to have prior knowledge or experience in cybersecurity, programming, or computers. Students will learn about network security, cyber ethics, cryptography, introductory Python programming, and many other interesting topics in current technology. GenCyber Camps have been generously funded by a grant from the National Security Agency and the National Science Foundation. There is no cost to a student to attend. GenCyber Tulsa is a non-residential camp. For additional information please contact us at gencyber@utulsa.edu GenCyber Tulsa 2023 High School Camp Application GenCyber Tulsa is limited to 40 participants . Applications will be accepted until all spaces are filled. Please do not submit multiple entries for the same child – duplicate entries will be deleted. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) Who is this camp for? The GenCyber Tulsa 2023 camp is focused on introducing and applying the GenCyber Cybersecurity Concepts and motivating participants to pursue cybersecurity careers to two important under-represented demographic categories in the security industry – Native Americans and females. This camp is open to any rising junior and senior high school student member of these communities, although participation from rising freshman and sophomore students is possible depending on availability. How many students will attend the camp? A total of forty (40) student participants will be served by the GenCyber Tulsa camp. While the camp is open to any high school student, females or those of Native American descent will be given priority. The 40-student limit will allow four groups of 10 students to be rotated through different cybersecurity training, skill building, and security scenarios while ensuring our ability to establish close professional relationships and offer sufficient assistance during hands-on, experiential learning activities. Does this camp teach my child / student to become a hacker”? No. One does not become a hacker in a week. But, we do hope that every camp participant will be energized to learn more about a career in the important and broad field of cybersecurity. While the term hacker” is often used incorrectly as a synonym for cyber criminal”, this camp uses security scenarios to get participants to focus on thinking like an adversary and include corresponding ethics discussions as well as discussing ways how to secure against the threat by the simplest and most effective means. The use of security scenarios and vignettes allows us to introduce and embed security ethics and ethical decision-making into relatable events. Cybersecurity ethics is embedded in each of the security scenarios and skills introduced during the camp. What are the important dates related to the camp? There are several important dates to be aware of: March 1, 2023: camp applications open June 5-9, 2023: camp dates Copyright © 2024 — GenCyber @ The University of Tulsa • All rights reserved. •...
